DMUK Hosts UN Volunteer Coordinator Nikita Shabayev for Inspiring Talk on Becoming a UN Volunteer
On September 27th, De Montfort University Kazakhstan welcomed Nikita Shabayev, UN Volunteer Coordinator in Kazakhstan, for an insightful session on how students can become UN volunteers and contribute to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Nikita highlighted the vital role UN Volunteers have played for over 53 years, recruiting people from across the globe, including the UK and Kazakhstan, to support key UN organizations like UNICEF in reaching global development goals. In 2023 alone, more than 12,000 volunteers were mobilized across Europe, with 100 volunteers actively serving in Kazakhstan. Students were encouraged by the inclusive nature of the program, with volunteers ranging from 18 to 71 years old.
Nikita also shared the many benefits of joining the UN Volunteer program, which includes a monthly living allowance, comprehensive medical insurance, 2.5 days of annual leave per month, access to UN training courses, and an exit allowance. He encouraged students to explore both in-person and online volunteer opportunities by creating an account on the UN Volunteer platform (app.unv.org) and applying for roles that suit their skills and interests.
The session drew over 50 DMUK students, all eager to learn how to increase their chances of being selected as UN volunteers. Nikita stressed the importance of being proactive in applying for multiple positions to improve the odds of acceptance.
