British Embassy in Kazakhstan Hosts Workshop on Transnational Education Programs in Almaty
The British Embassy in Kazakhstan, in collaboration with the British Council and De Montfort University Kazakhstan, organized a workshop titled “Transnational Educational (TNE) Programs as a Tool to Improve the Quality of Work and the Attractiveness of Universities.” This insightful event took place in Almaty as part of the 10th UK-Kazakhstan Intergovernmental Commission.
The workshop brought together a diverse group of experts and representatives from British and Kazakh universities, creating a platform for the exchange of knowledge and best practices in transnational education programs. Speakers from the University of Warwick, the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies, and the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education also gave special presentations on their experience of collaboration with Kazakh institutions. Participants discussed innovative strategies and initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and appeal of higher education institutions in Kazakhstan.
One of the workshop’s highlights was the sharing of case studies from both nations. Dr. Suzanna Tomassi, a Higher Education Specialist from the Department of Business and Trade in London presented a masterclass on the peculiarities of the UK higher education sector, while Dr. Zhadyra Makhmetova,Head of Academic Enhancement at Zhubanov University in Aktobe presented their successful strategic partnership with a prominent UK institution. This collaboration resulted in the launch of the Heriot-Watt and Zhubanov University joint programs in September, demonstrating the potential of international partnerships in higher education.
Additionally, Professor Madina Bigabatova, Dean of the KBTU (Kazakhstan-British Technical University) International School of Economics shared a compelling case study on the establishment of a dual-degree program in collaboration with the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE). This remarkable achievement exemplifies the potential for universities to offer world-class education and open doors for students to access international educational opportunities.
Director of Business and Trade at the British Embassy in Astana, Beth McKendrick, emphasized the importance of such collaborative initiatives, stating, “The education sector in Kazakhstan is hugely exciting and in such a competitive global environment has never been more important. We are delighted to witness the remarkable achievements and potential showcased by our colleagues in the Kazakh education sector.”
